Ductwork Installation & Replacement

Ductwork Installation & Replacement in Huntsville, AL

Your HVAC system can be the right size and still leave bedrooms hot, airflow weak, or the house humid. We see this when ducts are crushed, disconnected, too small, or laid out poorly. Blake Brothers handles air duct replacement in Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, and Athens when the ductwork is keeping the system from moving air where it needs to go.

With duct repair and testing, we check damaged sections and airflow before deciding that the ducts need to come out.

Signs Your Ductwork Needs Replacing

Look at what happens from room to room. One bedroom stays warmer than the hallway, or one register barely moves air while another one roars. Whistling when the system starts, weak airflow, or dust blowing from certain registers gives us another reason to check the ducts.

In the attic or crawlspace, we look for flex duct that has sagged, been crushed, torn, or pulled loose. Split insulation that exposes the duct underneath is another problem.

Dust alone does not mean the ducts need replacing. If the ductwork is sound but dirty, duct cleaning addresses a different problem.

Is Replacing Ductwork Worth It?

Yes, if bad ductwork is why some rooms are not getting enough air. Putting new heating and cooling equipment on undersized or badly damaged ducts leaves the new equipment fighting the same airflow problem.

Before recommending air duct replacement, we look at what can stay and what needs to come out. A damaged section can sometimes be repaired. Crushed, deteriorated, undersized, or poorly routed ducts can require replacement.

Leaks do not automatically mean the ducts need to come out. Duct sealing addresses leakage in ductwork that is still usable, while damaged or poorly sized ducts need a different repair.

Duct Design Comes First

We need to know how much air each part of the house needs before deciding what size ducts to install. Manual D uses the heating and cooling load for each part of the house to help size the supply and return ducts.

If the return side cannot bring enough air back to the equipment, the blower has to pull against too much resistance. We measure static pressure and check the supply plenum, return ducts, branch runs, and registers for restrictions.

Good ductwork installation is not replacing old runs with new ones of the same size. If the old layout was wrong, copying it gives you the same problem with new material.

Materials We Use

We do not use the same duct material for every run. Sheet metal works well for trunk lines and plenums. Insulated flex duct is useful for branch runs when it is sized, supported, and routed correctly. Duct board is used in some systems.

A lot of North Alabama ductwork runs through hot attics. We check the insulation R-value and the location of each run to limit heat gain before cooled air reaches the rooms.

What the Job Involves

We start by checking airflow, existing duct sizes, returns, registers, and the equipment they serve. Those measurements tell us what needs to come out and how to size the new ductwork.

Installation can include trunk lines, branch runs, plenums, returns, insulation, and register connections. Attic height, crawlspace access, framing, plumbing, and electrical lines affect how the ducts can be routed.

After installation, we check airflow at the registers. If you are keeping existing ducts, knowing how often air ducts should be cleaned helps separate routine cleaning from problems that need repair or replacement.

Ductwork Replacement Cost

Ductwork replacement cost depends on how much needs to come out and how difficult it is to reach. Replacing a few accessible runs is a different job from rebuilding the supply and return system.

The number and length of runs, attic or crawlspace access, plenum changes, added return air, insulation, and layout corrections affect the price. We need to see the duct system before we can tell you what the work will involve.

How Living in Huntsville Affects Your Ductwork

Huntsville summers put attic ductwork in very hot conditions while the AC is trying to cool the rooms below. Loose or disconnected ductwork can leak conditioned air into the attic, while crushed or sagging flex duct can restrict airflow before it reaches the rooms.

From older homes near downtown Huntsville to houses toward Monte Sano, we find tight attic access, additions served by undersized runs, and duct systems that have been changed over the years.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Ductwork?

Coverage depends on what damaged the ducts and the terms of your policy. A policy can cover sudden damage from a listed event while excluding age, deterioration, poor installation, and normal wear.

Check your policy or speak with your insurance carrier to find out how your specific damage is covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

It can be when damaged, undersized, or poorly routed ductwork is causing persistent airflow or comfort problems. Blake Brothers checks what can be repaired before recommending replacement.

Yes. If the problem is limited to certain runs, those sections may be repaired or replaced while usable ductwork remains in place.

Cost depends on how much ductwork needs replacement, attic or crawlspace access, the number and length of runs, return-air changes, insulation, plenums, and whether the layout needs to be corrected.
