Old wiring does not always mean the entire house needs to be rewired. We first need to know what wiring is still in use, what condition it is in, and how much of the house it serves.
If outdated or damaged wiring is limited to a few circuits, we can focus the work there. Whole house rewiring is used when those problems run throughout the electrical system, such as ungrounded circuits in multiple rooms, deteriorated wiring, or an older system that no longer supports the electrical load in the home.
Blake Brothers handles electrical services in Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, Athens, and across North Alabama.

Schedule OnlineOur Wiring and Rewiring Services
Our electricians replace wiring based on what is actually in the house. That includes:
- Whole-home and partial rewiring
- Old or damaged wiring replacement
- New grounded circuits
- Wiring for remodels and additions
- Circuits for appliances and other large electrical loads
- Outlet and switch replacement tied to rewiring
- Panel work needed for new circuits
We do not turn one bad circuit into a whole-home project. If the problem is isolated, we keep the work there.
Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring
Breakers that repeatedly trip, flickering lights, warm or discolored outlets, burning smells, and two-prong outlets all give us a reason to inspect the wiring.
Age is useful context, but it does not answer the question by itself. An older Huntsville home may have a newer kitchen and panel while original wiring still serves bedrooms or other areas. Electrical inspections help us identify what has already been updated and what is still in use.
Knob and Tube Wiring
Knob and tube wiring uses separate conductors supported by ceramic knobs and tubes. It does not include the equipment grounding found in modern residential wiring.
In older homes, we look for brittle insulation, previous alterations, and sections that are still carrying power. Some insurers place restrictions on homes where knob and tube remains in service.
Replacing a short section near an outlet does not update the wiring still running through the walls. Before electrical rewiring, we trace those circuits so we know exactly what needs to come out.
Aluminum Branch Wiring
Aluminum branch wiring was commonly installed from the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s. The connections at outlets, switches, and other devices are where we pay close attention because loose or deteriorated connections can overheat.
If we find aluminum wiring, we check how much is present and the condition of those connections. Leave outlets and switches in place rather than pulling them out to inspect the wiring yourself.
What a Rewire Involves
We map the existing circuits first. Then we plan where the new cable needs to run and where we need access.
We fish cable through existing wall and ceiling cavities where the framing allows it. Your walls do not normally have to come down, but some openings are needed when framing, old connections, or blocked cavities prevent us from reaching a circuit another way.
We check the panel during the same project. If it has enough capacity and is in good condition, it can stay. If it cannot support the finished system or has problems of its own, we include electrical panel replacement in the work.
House rewiring cost depends on how much wiring needs replacement, wall access, the number of circuits and devices, panel work, and permits. Those same conditions affect the timeline. A house where we can reach most circuits through accessible cavities takes a different amount of work than one with plaster walls, blocked framing, or several generations of electrical changes.
How Living in Huntsville Affects Your Wiring
Around Huntsville's historic areas, we work on homes that have been remodeled several times without receiving a complete electrical update. A newer panel or renovated room does not mean the wiring throughout the rest of the house was replaced at the same time.
North Alabama storms and power surges create separate electrical concerns. They do not mean a sound wiring system needs to be replaced.
Partial vs. Whole-Home Rewiring
A damaged circuit that is isolated from otherwise sound wiring can be replaced on its own. When old, ungrounded, or deteriorated wiring serves rooms throughout the house, replacing individual sections leaves the remaining old circuits in service.
Homeowners planning this work often ask, do I need an electrical panel upgrade? We check the panel's condition and available capacity against the circuits the house will have after the rewire.

Schedule OnlineFrequently Asked Questions
No. Age alone does not determine whether a house needs rewiring. An inspection should identify what wiring is still in service, its condition, grounding, previous upgrades, and whether it can safely support the home's electrical loads.
Usually not entirely. Electricians can often route new cable through existing wall and ceiling cavities, although some access openings may be necessary where framing, blocked cavities, or old connections prevent access.
Yes. If outdated or damaged wiring is limited to specific circuits, targeted rewiring may be enough. Whole-house rewiring is considered when unsafe, ungrounded, or deteriorated wiring remains throughout multiple areas of the home.
